Getting around with disabilities comes with a host of extra considerations in finding the right transportation. Finding a reliable wheelchair van rental starts with understanding the resources found in your rental destination. Use a certified driver rehabilitation specialist to assist in the process of setting up the vehicle with the correct accessibility resources vital to your safety and comfort.

Renting the best accessible van rentals isn’t without planning and addressing specific physical limitations. Not every rental offers the same accessibility options.  Work with a mobility experts to find the right vehicle that meets your needs for short or long-term rentals.

Finding Accessible Transportation

Whether you are planning a vacation or just need a wheelchair accessible vehicle for a day, finding the right transportation requires planning. There are several options to look into. Public transportation such as municipal bus systems, the subway, hired cars and taxis that are wheelchair accessible are options but not always ideal.

Even though subways indicate they are accessible, certain routes and stops might not be. Check ahead of time to not be stranded somewhere you don’t want to be. Busing systems also have set location stops and often have schedule nuances where one missed pickup could mean waiting an hour for the next bus.

This is why a wheelchair van rentals are the preferred choice for those who need complete independence when going to and from appointments, meetings or travel locations. Travelling directly to destinations without the additional sidewalk commute saves a tremendous amount of time and energy.

Wheelchair accessible van rentals come equipped with the features designed for easy vehicle access, mobility and access to storage items. When you rent a wheelchair van, mobility specialists will teach you how to operate every feature of the van so you can confidently drive.

Reasons for Choosing a Rental

There are a host of reasons to choose a wheelchair van rental, whether you need something locally or are traveling. Rentals give you control over travel without concerns over reliability and maintenance of the van. Reasons for wheelchair van rentals vary but include dealing with short-term disability commuting needs, test driving before buying your own, or taking that road trip you always dreamt of.

Short-Term Disability Needs

No one is exempt from a potential short-term disability. Car accidents, sports injuries or workers’ compensation incidents can leave a perfectly able-bodied person stuck in a cast or with limited mobility for months. The rehabilitation process could require getting to physical therapy and doctors’ appointments along with maintaining normal household duties like grocery shopping, taking kids to school or getting to work.

There are also times when someone has a friend or family member visiting from out of town requiring a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Fortunately, wheelchair van rental options include daily, weekly and monthly rates to accommodate these types of needs.

A Case Study: Susie is 75-years old, independent and active. She enjoys meeting her friends for lunch and going to get her hair done. She broke her leg in a recent fall but doesn’t want to rely on others for rides or wait for the bus.

She holds a valid driver’s license but can’t get around in her normal vehicle until her leg heals. Susie rents a wheelchair accessible Dodge Grand Caravan once a week to meet her friends and get her hair done, vital activities to keeping her mentally healthy and vibrant.

Extended Test Drive Before Buying

A wheelchair accessible vehicle rental is a great way to test out vehicle options before buying an accessible minivan or having one converted. With all the different features available it’s difficult to know exactly what will fit your needs and your abilities until you have driven one and used it for various daily activities.

By working alongside certified mobility consultants you’ll determine whether a side entry lift or in-floor ramp van would be best. Renting gives you more insight than just a 30-minute test drive. You will discover if entering and exiting the vehicle with a particular style ramp at designated handicap parking spaces is easy. If it doesn’t meet your needs you can test another style until you find the right option that fits your normal routines.

A Case Study: Jill is the mom of a little girl, Amanda with cerebral palsy who loves going to the local park where she can feed the ducks at the lake. Amanda is confined to a wheelchair, unable to walk on her own. Even the littlest things like dropping her daughter off at school has challenges.

Jill recently learned about a grant that helps fund the purchase of a wheelchair van but she has talked to other parents who had bad experiences with accessibility on vehicles they bought. Before she makes a final decision, Jill wants to make sure both she and her daughter feel comfortable with all aspects of the wheelchair accessible van.

She was relieved to find out she could rent something with the same features before she completed the grant paperwork and financing application. After working with the certified mobility specialist, Jill test drove two different wheelchair accessible vans before making her final decision on the comfort and ease-of-use in a Ford Transit.

Traveling and Road Trips

Travelling often takes you away from your own resources for assistance. Even if you are taking a road trip starting from home, you may want a more spacious and comfortable vehicle to use. Family trips often require more luggage and general gear that goes along with you. You may also be hitting road conditions or terrain not commonly found where you live. A wheelchair van rental gives you options to get more cargo space or choose a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive that keep everyone safer on the journey.

A Case Study: Larry and Susan love to take the kids on a road trip every year to a friend’s cabin near Lake Tahoe. However, Susan was injured in an accident several years ago making it impossible for her to travel without her wheelchair. While her everyday van is fine for running around town, they want to have more space and comfort when driving from their Salem home to Tahoe.

Renting a Mercedes Sprinter gives them the ability to take the extended road trip with more space and extra luxuries. There is less complaining from the kids about being in a cramped backseat. Susan has a comfortable front passenger seat with the ability to relieve Larry of driving duties if necessary thanks to the mobility modifications.

Entry Access in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

When renting a wheelchair van, make sure it is equipped with state-of-the-art mobility equipment such as BraunAbility, ElDorado, and Vantage Mobility International (VMI) lowered floors or automated lifts. These offer a variety of systems depending on the needs you have. These systems come equipped in one of two styles of vehicles: side entry and rear entry.

Side Entry Vehicles

Side entry vehicles come in a variety of models including the Dodge Grand Caravan. Regardless of the vehicle model you have, a side entry wheelchair accessible van makes it possible for the person with disabilities to drive or ride in the front of the vehicle. They come equipped for modification of either a fold out ramp or in-floor ramp for exiting the vehicle.

The thing to consider with side entry minivans are parking locations. There needs to be plenty of handicap parking spaces or parallel parking available. If not, it will be difficult to deploy the ramp and exit the vehicle. If you are keeping the van for more than one day be sure to measure the garage to ensure the ramp will have room to deploy there as well.

Rear Entry Vehicles

Rear entry wheelchair van rentals are also available. A rear entry vehicle is also equipped with a ramp for entry and exit into the vehicle. These vehicles make parking in most lots easy. A wheelchair van rental with rear entry doesn’t accommodate a person seeking to drive or be a front row passenger.

Another drawback is parking where the ramp extends into traffic areas such as small parking lots or can’t extend at all. If you will be going to areas with mainly parallel parking you won’t be able to get the person with disabilities out.

Wheelchair Van Rental Necessities

Renting a wheelchair accessible van requires the same type of documentation that renting a regular car or truck does with a few other things. Without them, you will not be able to leave the rental agency with the van.

Be sure to have the following when picking up your wheelchair van rental:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Be at least 25 years old
  • Provide a valid credit card
  • Bring proof of renter’s insurance
  • Bring your handicap card because rental companies won’t provide one.

If your rental is being paid for by a car insurance or workers’ compensation claim, be sure to have the claim number and pertinent information as well.

Rental Van Rates

R & J offers competitive rental van rates throughout Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. To rent an accessible van, the daily rate for up to six days is $125 per day. This rate drops to $100 per day for seven through 13 days and down again to $95 per day through 20 days. Any rental over 21 days will cost $90 per day.  This includes mileage of up to 100 miles per day but after that it’s an extra 35 cents per mile.

A deposit fee is required to hold the rental. The fees start at $125 and go up to $500 for rental periods over 14 days. Deposits are partially refundable in the event of a cancellation. Confirm the deposit and refund information when calling.

Delivery and pick-up service are also available for an additional charge. Expect to pay more for delivery charges to locations farther from the rental facility. Cleaning and fuel fees are only charged when the rental van is returned without the same amount of fuel it left with or is otherwise left dirty or damaged.

Securing the Van Rental

Don’t lose your deposit by missing your pick-up time. Van rentals must be picked up during normal business hours. Pick-up and delivery options are available for a small fee if you require help getting to the office or require the vehicle to be brought to your home location.

When travelling by air, you will likely need a shuttle service. Rental agencies such as R&J Mobility do have shuttle service from airports for a fee. For visitors arriving at Portland International Airport (PDX), the fee for pick-up and delivery service is $200 each way. Another affordable option check into the Portland Airport Hut Shuttle. Call them direct to determine rates and availability.

Confirm your reservation prior to arriving for pickup. Double check the features of the wheelchair van you need is still the van available for pickup. When travelling, give yourself enough time to pick up the van and learn how to operate any devices you are unfamiliar with. You will not be allowed to leave the rental agency until the service representatives are confident you can safely operate the vehicle.

Renting Vs. Buying a Wheelchair Accessible Van

A time may come where you realize that buying a wheelchair van is in order. Renting gives you extended time to explore what options fit your physical limitations and overall family needs. Keep in mind that Medicaid and Medicare generally don’t cover a wheelchair accessible van or its rental so you will need to pay these as out-of-pocket expenses.

After test driving a few options, you’ll be prepared buy the right accessible van with the right mobility options. Consider good pre-owned vans that contain the most or all of features you need. You can also look at converting regular vans or trucks into wheelchair accessible vehicles. Most vans are convertible and many trucks and SUVs have convertible options as well.
